*HISTORY OF THE JOGGLING BOARD*
In 1803 on Acton Plantation, a family member developed rheumatism and was unable to enjoy carriage rides. In response, the family made a joggling board to simulate the motion of a carriage ride. Joggling boards spread through the Lowcountry and became a necessity for all porches. According to legend, if you had a joggling board you would never have an unwed daughter. Young couples would sit on the bench and "joggle," guiding themselves to the middle. Once reaching the center, they would engage in an intimate moment or simply enjoy easy conversation.
